A super town museum at
the heart of its community

Wymondham Museum gives you a wide-ranging overview of life in the town through the centuries and there's plenty for children to do too.

Housed in the town’s Bridewell, or prison, you can visit a dungeon and a police cell and learn about the Bridewell’s link to prison reformer John Howard.

Gleaming ranks of brushes, audio recollections from factory workers, and the invitation to try your hand at a brush-filling machine make the museum’s display on Britons brush factory a star attraction.

Displays also cover one of England’s great social rebellions –  Kett’s Rebellion, which was led in 1549 by Wymondham man Robert Kett. Plus find out about the Great Fire of Wymondham, the town’s unusual Market Cross and its links with surrounding farming communities.

  • Changing displays
  • Family history archive and extensive photo collection
  • The museum shop has a very good selection of local history books.

Recommended length of visit: 1 to 1.5 hours

Other good things to do near by
Wymondham is an attractive and historic market town which retains its medieval street pattern and many handsome Georgian buildings. There's a great selection of independent shops, pubs and restaurants and the iconic Wymondham Abbey has a beautiful interior and turbulent history.

Wymondham Abbey Station is the starting point for Mid Norfolk Railway’s train trips. Heritage diesel trains take you through glorious countryside and past stations and signal boxes un-touched by time to Dereham’s superb mid-Victorian station. Wymondham Station itself is worth the short walk for its Brief Encounter tea rooms and small railway museum.
